- Sacrificial anode
Highly active metals that are used to prevent a less active material surface from corroding; sacrificial Anodes are created from a metal alloy with a more negative electrochemical potential than the other metal it will be used to protect.
- Sandwich element
Semi-finished products in mostly plate form, which consists of two cover sheets and an intermediate layer, for example from various foams, with the aim of reducing weight without stiffness loss.
- Secondary metal
Material that is obtained through recovery and treatment of metal which has undergone at least one manufacturing process.
Separation that occurs in the melt during metal production; arises in the transition solid-liquid; different solubility of alloying elements in a solid or liquid state as well as different density are crucial.
- Semi-finished products
General term to describe intermediate castings such as sheets, plates, rods, tubes, bars and coils.
- Shear strength
Resistance of a material to tangential forces; strength of a material or component against the type of yield or structural failure where the material or component fails in shear.
- Sheet metal
Flat rolling mill product made of metal.
- Shrinkage porosity
Casting defect in which a micro-porous structure is formed in the last solidified places of the cast piece, mainly in materials with a longer solidification period.
Mostly circular piece of metal uniform thickness made of semi-finished products.
- Soft annealing
Heat treatment of metals, to improve formability and material properties.
- Solid solution
Mixture of two crystalline solids that coexist as a new crystalline solid, or crystal lattice.
- Solidus line
Borderline in the phase diagram of an alloy, which separates the area of only solid phases from solid and liquid phases.
- Solution annealing
First step of hardening; describes the increase in hardening attributable to foreign atoms (alloying elements) in the crystal lattice of aluminium.
- Stabilization annealing
Hours-long heat treatment of castings at about 200-300 °C before mechanical processing to avoid volume and dimensional changes through precipitation processes.
- Stress corrosion cracking
The occurrence of intergranular cracking under the action of an aqueous corrosion medium, usually containing chloride, and simultaneous mechanical tensile stress.
- Surface treatment, chemical
Change to the surface properties by chemically aggressive media such as acids or alkalis.
- Surface treatment, mechanical
Change to the surface properties by mechanical forces such as cutting or grinding.
