Segregation in the entire casting; solidification takes place from the outside to the inside, whereby by-elements and alloying elements are found saturated in the centre of the casting.
- Massive forming
Spatial distribution of the material through large changes to cross section profiles.
- Master alloy
Alloy used exclusively as an addition for the melting process to adjust the composition or to limit impurities.
- Material number
Unique identifier of a material; aluminium: first digit = main group, second to fourth digit = quantities of alloy additives, fifth digit = type of alloy.
- Material test
Test procedure with which the behaviour and material characteristics of standard material samples or finished components are determined under mechanical, thermal or chemical stresses.
- Melting loss
Metal loss during the melting process due to high oxidation tendency of aluminium.
- Melting temperature
Temperature at which a material melts or the lowest melting point of the compounds of alloy.
- Metal deposition
Manufacture of metal or metal layer from a metal compound; usually a metal salt is reduced to the metal.
- Microstructure analysis
Microscopic evaluation of metal structure with regard to the microstructure, precipitation formation, grain size, porosity, shrinkage.
- Mill scale
Formed on the outer surface of rolled plates, which have increased residual stress potential due to the forming process; can have a negative impact on subsequent machining processes.
